Effect of sunlight on cabbage

The gateway towards production for any plant is germination. Each and every seed has to pass through this for the beginning of growth. While Temperature and light are the main conditions that should be fulfilled for entry.
Cabbage (one of the main and favorite vegetables grown in Pakistan) yields also depend on germination rate. Farmers as well as breeders are trying to grow Cabbage with high yield all around the year. Proper maintenance of light and temperature can give its best yield even in early sowing. But its sensitivity towards temperature and sunlight is the main barrier in production. Sowing in early October or in late September can suppress germination as the high temperature is observed during the daytime in these months. The question is how to cope with this problem.

For this purpose, research was conducted at the Farm of Green Gold Agri Seeds (Pvt) Ltd. to study the effect of light and temperature on Cabbage’s germination in the open field. Benazir (Cabbage hybrid) seeds were sown in both shade (Northside) and towards sunlight (Southside) in early October. The outcomes declared that the direction of the sowing of seeds matters a lot as it can control both temperature and light effects. Moreover, seeds sown on the North (shade side) can germinate faster and germinate 50% more than the seeds sown on Southside.
So, it is suggested to growers sow seeds in shade (Northside) while doing early sowing (Early Sept-late October) for faster and higher germination.
